Lutherans urged to support Pakistan flood relief

As the flooding in northern Pakistan continues and millions are homeless and suffering, Lutheran Church–Canada is launching an emergency appeal for funds to assist in relief work. “This is a very unique situation,” explained LCC’s executive responsible for social ministry, Rev. Dr. Leonardo Neitzel. “The Christian presence in Pakistan is very small, however, Canadian Lutheran World Relief has contacts through whom we can ensure all the funds are received by agencies helping those most in need.” He noted that the work of Christian agencies in the predominantly Muslim country is an opportunity to show Christ’s love in action.

With almost 1500 deaths and millions without food or shelter, the situation in the region is desperate as the monsoon season continues. The most likely partner for relief work is ACTAlliance, a consortium of church-related relief agencies whose main mission is responding to natural disasters. Its primary focus in this disaster is helping women and children who are most at risk for disease.

“One thing we can all do is pray,” said Dr. Neitzel. “We should pray for those who are in the midst of such terrible suffering and for those who are working to bring comfort to them.” He encourages all pastors to include special prayers in their services on Sunday.
