St. Peter’s Oyen closes

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (Oyen, AB)

OYEN, Alta. – On Wednesday evening, June 8, 2022, the eight members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Oyen gathered for a closing service. The congregation was originally located at Sibbald, where it was organized in 1943 with ten charter members in attendance. Rev. Detlefsen of Luseland, Saskatchewan, served as the congregation’s first pastor. The congregation moved to Oyen in 1969, and the church building was moved from Leader, Saskatchewan, to Oyen when that congregation closed. The building was renovated and was dedicated in 1972. In August 1981, the congregation received its first resident pastor, Rev. Arnie Burke.
