Caring for refugees

CLWR-World-Refugee-Day

CANADA – As World Refugee Day (June 20) nears, President Robert Bugbee is calling on Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) members to consider how they can help refugees.

In a new video for Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), President Bugbee reflects on how, in some ways, Jesus lived a refugee’s life. “I think it would be a great thing for our people to give thought to the plight of refugees, and to ways in which we might be able to be supportive of them,” he says in the video, “as an outgrowth of our faith in Jesus who was Himself a refugee at various times.”

One way in which LCC members can care for refugees is by supporting the work of CLWR. “Helping refugees is in CLWR’s DNA,” they note on their website. “After  all, we were founded in 1946 to help refugees of the Second World War.”

Today CLWR continues to make a difference for people who have been forced to leave their homes, both in Canada through refugee sponsorship, and by caring for refugees in places like Syria, South Sudan, and Somalia.

Congregations wondering how they can support refugees can find resources at Canadian Lutheran World Relief’s website at www.clwr.org/WRD.htm. Motivated by Christ’s love, CLWR and Lutheran Church–Canada work in effective partnership to improve day-to-day life and provide opportunity for long-term sustainability in communities around the globe. Within Canada, CLWR assists Lutheran communities engaged in refugee resettlement.
