CUCA awards first honourary doctorate to former Edmonton mayor

EDMONTON – At convocation this past May, Concordia University College of Alberta (CUCA) in Edmonton presented its first honourary doctoral degree to Stephen Mandel, former mayor of Edmonton.

“Mandel’s commitment to Edmonton and its residents accords fully with Concordia’s mandate and mission,” CUCA noted in the release announcing the honour. “He is an independent thinker, ethical leader, and citizen for the common good.”

Mandel served as mayor of Edmonton from 2004-2013, focusing on revitalizing Edmonton’s urban centre and public transportation services.  “Mandel repeatedly stated that ‘Edmonton’s post-secondary institutions are crucial to the city’s economy and identity,’ and his belief that post-secondary institutions are an essential vehicle for creating and developing new leaders and the reputation of this city,” CUCA’s release notes. “He knows Concordia plays a major role in this quest.”

“Mr. Mandel has earned a permanent spot as a true Concordian,” the release continues. “Concordia is proud and feels blessed to call this dedicated leader and exception ‘citizen for the common good,’ and alumnus and ‘Doctor’ of the university.”
