Directors elect new vice-president

WINNIPEG – A vice-presidential vacancy was filled by LCC’s Board of Directors with the election of Rev. Tom Kruesel to serve as third vice-president of Lutheran Church–Canada, effective August 1. The vacancy occurred when former first vice-president, Rev. Nolan Astley received a call to serve in LCC’s East District. He had to resign his position so that each district would have a representative vice-president.

Rev. Kruesel, a 1990 graduate of Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton serves Bethany Lutheran Church in Campbell River, B.C. With his election, he will resign his position on Concordia University College’s Board of Regents. LCC’s constitution does not allow a person to hold two elected positions simultaneously.

Lutheran Church–Canada’s Handbook does not prescribe the process for filling a vice president vacancy. Following a precedent set in a previous vacancy situation, LCC President Robert Bugbee consulted with the ABC District president, Rev. Don Schiemann who proposed four candidates. Further consultation with the Council of Presidents narrowed the field to two whose names were placed before the Board of Directors for election. Under LCC’s constitution, the board acts as ‘Synod Convention’ between conventions.

Rev. Kruesel will serve the remaining two-years in the current term and would be eligible for re-election at the 2011 synod convention if he is nominated
