Dr. Winger accepts call to serve as CLTS president

Rev. Dr. Thomas Winger has accepted the call to serve as Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary’s (CLTS) new president. He announced his intentions in a letter to the seminary’s electors last week.

“I am honoured at your decision to nominate me for the office of seminary president,” he writes in the letter. “Having sought God’s will in His Word and through prayer, I write to you now indicating my willingness to accept the office laid before me. In accord with Peter’s admonition, I receive this office of oversight ‘not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful gain, but eagerly’ (1 Pet. 5:2). And I pray God will bless me with the gifts I need to carry it out according to His will.”

Dr. Winger already has a good sense of what the position will entail, having served CLTS the past four years as Acting President. He will maintain teaching duties while serving as the seminary’s president.

“While this seminary is somewhat smaller than it has been in years past,” he writes, “it is certainly not lacking the Lord’s blessing. Working together, we have demonstrated integrity, faithfulness, and diligence to the Church, and the members of [Lutheran Church–Canada] have responded with immense support and love. I pray that the provision of a called president will move us even further down the road, and receive not only our synod’s blessing but the Lord’s.”

Dr. Winger’s installation has been tentatively scheduled for September 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the seminary’s chapel, to coincide with the new school year’s Opening Service.
