Head to Vancouver for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

RICHMOND, B.C. – The committee at Trinity Lutheran Church organizing their component of the Christian outreach at Vancouver’s Winter Olympic Games met Sunday, November 15. Chaired by Deacon Don Hindle, the committee further refined plans for engaging the thousands of athletes, families and visitors who will converge on the city February 12-28. Trinity is strategically located across the street from the O-Zone hospitality area and the speed skating venue’s media centre. It is planning Christian concerts (including Concordia Concert Choir from Edmonton and The CREW), an Internet café, daily Matins service, big-screen viewing of major events and other outreach activities.

Members of Vancouver area congregations have opened their homes and churches to house volunteers. “If you can get to Vancouver, we can find somewhere for you to stay and somewhere for you to work” said Mr. Hindle. Volunteers are needed for everything from baking to keeping watch over the parking lot.

Also at the meeting was Jack O’Halloran, who has developed opportunities for Christian witness at major sporting events all over the world, including several Olympics. He emphasized that “the goal for every volunteer is to share the love of Jesus with everyone who comes anywhere near the church,” and stressed that this is not a sporting event, but an outreach opportunity. “The Olympics just gives us more lives to touch with the Gospel,” he said.

This is the first Olympic Winter Games in Canada since the founding of Lutheran Church–Canada in the summer of 1988. The Calgary games took place in early 1988 before LCC’s founding convention.
