Maxine Holm passes on to glory
REGINA – Maxine Evelyn Holm, who served Lutheran Church–Canada’s (LCC) former Central District for decades in numerous capacities, has gone home to be with the Lord. She passed away December 5, 2022.
Maxine (née Baase) was born in Kelowna, B.C. on August 11, 1941, and raised in New Westminster. Her husband, Roy Holm, was the longtime president of LCC’s Central District, first elected to the position in 1978. Upon moving to Regina from Estevan (where they had lived for 18 years), Maxine also began serving with the district, taking on the role of Secretary to the District President. She worked for the district for 22 years.
Maxine would go on to serve the church in other roles too, including as editor of the district’s newsletter, The Central Lutheran, and as district archivist. When district news was incorporated into The Canadian Lutheran in 2000, Maxine became the magazine’s editor of Central District news, serving until the end of 2002. Maxine continued as archivist for the Central District until the district moved its headquarters to Winnipeg in 2013.
In addition to these roles, Maxine served eleven years in her retirement on the Board of Directors for Eden Care Communities.
“When I was elected District President in 2000, Maxine said that she would stay on as the president’s secretary for another year to help me navigate this new position. She was most helpful and kind to this parish pastor suddenly thrust into the position of overseeing the entire Central District.” — Rev. Thomas Prachar
Rev. Thomas Prachar, President Emeritus of the Central District, expressed gratitude for Maxine’s long service to the church. “When I was elected District President in 2000, Maxine said that she would stay on as the president’s secretary for another year to help me navigate this new position,” he reflected. “She was most helpful and kind to this parish pastor suddenly thrust into the position of overseeing the entire Central District.”
“The congregations, pastors, and deacons of our District were truly blessed for all the work Maxine did for them,” he continued. “Her love for her Lord and the church inspired her to work diligently behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran smoothly.”
Maxine is survived by her daughters Sherri (Ron) Russell and Gina (Cody) Swan; sons Michael (Lili) and David; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Marilyn Carter (John-deceased) and brother Robert (Marlene-deceased), as well as many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; daughter Debra; sister Karen; and parents Rev. Carl and Helene Baase.
A funeral service was held for Maxine on December 12, 2022, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Regina, where she was a member. The service was also livestreamed online.
The family has requested no flowers but invites people to make a donation in Maxine’s memory to a charity of your choice.
