Pentecost at de l’Ascension in Montreal
Editor’s note: This article has been updated (September 14, 2022) to clarify the contributions of the Ascension Lutheran (LCMS) congregation in Montreal in organizing Pentecost celebrations.
MONTREAL, QC. – The celebration of Pentecost at Église évangélique luthérienne de l’Ascension (LCC) and Ascension Lutheran Church (LCMS) took many forms.
It began on Saturday, June 4 with an open house outreach to community neighbours, planned by Deaconess Emilie Stoller-Prozenko and Ruth Stone, members of the LCMS congregation.
Sunday saw the two congregations hold Pentecost services of the Word and Sacrament, first in French (with two baptisms), and then in English. An international potluck followed, with many flavours and people representing a variety of nations.
After the meal together, the group shared bilingual hymns of God’s loving promises using the Lutheran Service Book and Liturgies et Cantiques Luthériens. There were special solos and group songs in Thai, German, Zulu, and Hebrew, with PowerPoint and violin accompaniment along the way.
Among those in attendance were non-Christians from the open house, as well as a Dominican woman and Mexican family, speaking mostly Spanish and little English. These Spanish speakers—who had joined for English worship, the potluck and the hymn sing—received a free copy of the new Spanish Lutheran hymnal.
Many hands participated in organizing the outreach to the community, the international potluck, and the bilingual hymn sing. The congregations in Montreal hope to make these celebrations a tradition. You are invited to participate next year through online technology. Please email us to communicate your interest to participate.
May God use these efforts of outreach and in-reach through Word, food, and song, now and in the future, to proclaim the love of His Son Jesus in the region of Montreal and possibly your region as well.
