Registration for Concordia Lutheran Seminary’s Spring Quest Course Opens

Quest – “Heroes & Heretics in the Early Church”

As the saying goes, “those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” This spring’s Quest course focuses on the value of knowing ancient church history, while considering both the heroes and the heresies of the 4^th and 5^th centuries A.D. Through the drama of emperors, councils, creeds, bishops, priests, monks, and lay people, we will discover the heart of the Trinitarian and Christological controversies that shape our faith even today. For what was at stake, for heroes and heretics alike, was nothing less than the clarity of the gospel itself. Our sessions will be led by Alex Marque, who is a PhD candidate in the history of biblical interpretation at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, and this semester’s full-time visiting instructor at Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton.

Tuesday 19 March: “A Battle Fought at Night: Alexander and Athanasius against Arius at the council of Nicaea.”

Tuesday 26 March: “And We Believe in the Holy Spirit: A Trio of Heroes for the Trinity of Persons in God at the second Ecumenical Council.”

Tuesday 2 April: “Mary Mother of God? Cyril of Alexandria against Nestorius on the oneness of Christ at the council of Ephesus.”

Tuesday 9 April: “Jesus Wept: Eutyches’ misunderstanding of Cyril and the reaffirmation of Jesus’ Humanity at the council of Chalcedon.”

Quest runs from 7:00-9:00 pm. As always, you can attend Quest for free, in person at the seminary or online. Group participation using the seminary’s online platform is welcome. Invite your friends!
