Supporting the people of Haiti after deadly earthquake
HAITI – Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) is urging its members to lift up the people of Haiti in prayer as they deal with the aftermath of the massive and deadly earthquake that occurred in western Haiti on August 14, 2021. The Haitian Civil Protection General Directorate (DGPC) reports at least 1297 people dead and 5,700 injured, with numbers expected to increase.
In a release today, Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) announced that “CLWR’s partners on the ground are already responding by helping ensure emergency shelter, sanitation, hygiene and trauma care for those affected.” CLWR has joined forces with other Canadian charities, through the Humanitarian Coalition, to appeal for funds and rush emergency assistance to those dealing with the devastating aftermath of the earthquake. Donations can be made by visiting clwr.org/Haiti. Donations can also be made by phoning the CLWR office at 1-800-661-2597 (Monday to Thursday, 9:00 – 16:00 CDT) or by mailing a cheque to 600-177 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5.
The following prayer suggestion has been provided by Rev. M.L. Smith, LCC Missions Director:
Lord of all creation, You are our refuge in times of trouble. We implore You to be with our brothers and sisters in Haiti who are dealing with the aftermath of this deadly earthquake. Provide the comfort and peace that only You can bring during this time. Console the hearts of those who mourn and ease the suffering of those injured. Bless the relief efforts of the first responders and the agencies on the ground providing food, shelter and care. And bolster the resolve of governments and those with means to assist with the recovery. We also pray, Lord, that You strengthen the faith of Your people during this difficult time that they may trust that though the mountains leave their place and the hills be tossed to the ground Your love shall never leave us and Your promise of salvation in Christ Jesus shall never be shaken. All these things and whatever else You know they need, grant them, Lord, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen
