Trinity Richmond gearing up for Olympic outreach

RICHMOND, B.C. – A Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) congregation in metro Vancouver says it needs help welcoming the world to the February 2010 Winter Olympics.

Ron Hindle, a deacon at Trinity, Richmond, said his church needs volunteers because it will run several outreach programs and is located directly across the street from the O-Zone – the city’s Olympic entertainment and hospitality site. It is also about a 25-minute walk from the Richmond Oval.

“We have about 1,100 four-hour shifts that need filling,” said Hindle, in an email to the Canadian Lutheran.

He said the church will need two people to work four-hour shifts at an Internet café, three people to work three-hour baking shifts, six to 10 people to work four-hour shifts as security, and one to two people to perform janitorial duties.

“With the number of visitors expected at the Trinity site, the church needs large supplies of disposables such as toilet paper, coffee cups, plates,” added Hindle, saying cash donations would also help.

Hindle said he hopes volunteers will travel to Vancouver to help out.

Trinity members will also open their homes to house volunteers.

A suburban city, Richmond is located across the Fraser River from Vancouver. It is also home to Vancouver International Airport.

The Olympics will run February 12 to February 28.
